LA Zoo Lights

My family enjoys the Los Angeles Zoo. We go 2-3 times per year as a family or with out of town visitors. The landmark Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is home to a diverse collection of 1,100 animals representing 250 different species, many of which are rare or endangered.

We were excited to be invited to media night of L.A. ZOO LIGHTS where we were able to enjoy the 113 acres of new lights and displays. It was a brisk evening. An ideal night for a family outing.  The chilly weather really got us in the holiday mood where we enjoyed the self-guided walking tour through select areas of the Zoo while sipping hot chocolate and roasted nuts.

My children range from 7 to 23 years old and each one enjoyed LA Zoo Lights for different reasons.

Luke, the 7-year old, loved the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles). We spent a good deal of time going window to window checking out the Mambas, chameleons and tortoises.

While most L.A. Zoo animal residents are asleep, Ava (the 10-year old), enjoyed the unique visitor experience that featured the only opportunity in Los Angeles to see real reindeer.

The 16-year old enjoyed the steaming hot chocolate, churros and other holiday treats and goodies.

Bree, the 23-year old, enjoyed the thousands of LED lights, illuminated snowflakes, stunning 3-D projections, and the musical light-and-water show where we oooh'd and awww'd at the menagerie of animal characters brought to "life" including monkeys scampering through the grounds, a gigantic glowing snake coiled on a roof, a hillside with snowboarding iguanas, animated elephants wearing colorful holiday sweaters, an origami-type rhino and so much more.

Everyone enjoyed their time together and, of course, our visit with Santa Claus!

L.A. ZOO LIGHTS is open every night, except Christmas Eve (December 24) and Christmas Day (December 25), from 6 to 10 pm Mondays through Thursdays, and 6 to 11 pm Fridays through Sundays and December 21 through 23.

Don't forget a coat!
